DOVETAIL CERAMIC LINER
Dovetail Ceramic Liner
What It Is
A dovetail ceramic liner is a wear protection tile with a tapered side profile - wider at the back and narrower at the face. This shape creates a mechanical lock when the tile is installed into a matching steel channel or welded rail. The name comes from woodworking joinery, where a dovetail joint is known for its strength without glue.
Tecera manufactures these liners from high‑density alumina (92% or 95% Al₂O₃) and also offers ZTA (zirconia‑toughened alumina) for high‑impact zones. The tiles are pressed or cast with the dovetail profile built in during forming, not machined afterward. This preserves the ceramic's structural integrity.
Where are they used? Mining chutes, hoppers, transfer points, and cyclones. Coal preparation plants. Cement and aggregate handling. Steel mill sinter chutes. Any location where high‑velocity abrasive material would quickly wear through steel, and where ordinary epoxy‑bonded tiles might loosen due to impact or heat.
The core advantage of the dovetail design is that it eliminates reliance on adhesive for retention. Standard ceramic tiles are held in place by epoxy alone. In a chute receiving heavy lumps of ore, the impact can shear the adhesive layer. Once a tile loosens, the gap exposes the steel underneath, and wear accelerates rapidly. A dovetail liner is mechanically locked. Even if the adhesive fails, the tile cannot fall out because the wider back is trapped behind a steel rail or channel. For a wholesale buyer, this means offering a solution that works where other liners fail - and justifying a higher price point with clear engineering advantage.
What to Look For
When evaluating a dovetail ceramic liner, three factors determine performance.
First, the taper angle and depth. The dovetail must be deep enough to provide secure mechanical retention but not so deep that the ceramic becomes weak at the narrow neck. Tecera uses a standard taper of approximately 15 degrees, with a depth of 5–8 mm depending on tile thickness. This geometry has been field‑tested over decades.
Second, the ceramic grade. For most applications, 92% alumina is sufficient. Where impact is severe - such as a primary crusher discharge chute - ZTA is recommended. ZTA has fracture toughness roughly 50% higher than standard alumina, so it resists cracking from heavy lumps.
Third, the installation system. Dovetail liners require welded steel rails or channels on the equipment surface. The spacing and orientation of these rails must match the tile dimensions. Tecera provides installation drawings and can supply pre‑fabricated rail kits. For retrofit projects where the existing steel is uneven, a layer of grout or epoxy can be used to level the surface before rail installation.
Material and Manufacturing
The raw material is high‑purity calcined alumina powder. For 92% grade, domestic powder is used. For 95% and ZTA grades, imported powder ensures low iron and sodium content. The powder is milled to a controlled particle size, then spray‑dried into free‑flowing granules.
Forming is done by cold isostatic pressing for larger tiles, and by dry pressing for smaller ones. The dovetail profile is formed in the die - the green tile comes out of the press with the taper already present. This is critical because machining the dovetail after sintering would introduce micro‑cracks. After pressing, the tiles are dried slowly to remove moisture. Rushing the drying step causes invisible micro‑cracks that later grow under impact.
Sintering is performed in a tunnel kiln at 1500–1550°C. At these temperatures, the alumina grains fuse together. Density reaches 3.63–3.68 g/cm³, water absorption drops below 0.01%, and hardness reaches Mohs 9. After sintering, each tile is inspected for chips, cracks, and dimensional accuracy. The dovetail profile is checked using a go/no‑go gauge. Tiles that fail any inspection are rejected - typically 2–3% of production.
What distinguishes Tecera from competitors is the combination of isostatic pressing for large tiles and the use of ZTA for impact zones. Many suppliers only offer dovetail liners in 92% alumina, which can crack in high‑impact applications. Others use dry pressing for all sizes, leading to density gradients and uneven wear. Tecera's process matches the forming method to the tile size and the ceramic grade to the application.

Rails are manufactured from mild steel flat bar, welded to the equipment shell. The gap between the rail and the dovetail slot is filled with epoxy or grout during installation to provide full support.
Why the Dovetail Design Creates Value
Because the dovetail profile mechanically locks the tile to a steel rail, the liner does not rely on epoxy for retention. In a chute handling coarse iron ore at 1,000 tons per hour, the impact of falling rocks can generate peak forces exceeding 1,000 N per tile. Epoxy alone has shear strength of about 15–20 MPa. A 150×150 mm tile has a bonded area of 22,500 mm², so the theoretical shear capacity is 340–450 kN - far higher than the impact force. The problem is not the absolute strength but the fatigue life. Repeated impact causes micro‑cracks in the epoxy layer, and over time the bond fails. A dovetail liner does not depend on the epoxy for retention. The epoxy serves only to fill gaps and prevent material ingress. Even if the epoxy cracks, the tile stays in place because the dovetail is trapped behind the rail. For a mine that previously replaced epoxy‑bonded tiles every 6–8 months due to adhesive failure, dovetail liners have been known to last 3–5 years. For the wholesale buyer, this means a product that solves a chronic problem - and customers who are willing to pay for a solution that works.
Because the dovetail tiles can be installed without waiting for epoxy to cure, the equipment can return to service much faster. Standard epoxy‑bonded tiles require 24 hours of cure time before the chute can be used. In an emergency repair, that means the plant stays down for an extra day. Dovetail liners are mechanically fixed as soon as the rails are welded. The epoxy is only a filler, not a structural bond. The plant can resume operation immediately after installation. For a power plant that loses $50,000 per hour of downtime, eliminating a 24‑hour cure period saves over a million dollars in lost production. For the wholesale buyer, this is a compelling selling point for critical spares and emergency repairs.
Because ZTA grade has fracture toughness of 5.0–6.5 MPa·m¹/² - roughly 50% higher than 95% alumina - it resists cracking from heavy impact. In a crusher discharge chute where rocks up to 300 mm drop from height, standard alumina tiles can develop cracks after a few months. ZTA tiles in the same service have been reported to last 2–3 years without cracking. The mechanism is the zirconia phase transformation: when a crack begins to form, the zirconia particles expand slightly, putting the crack tip into compression and stopping it from growing. For a mine that processes 50,000 tons of ore per day, a chute failure that takes 4 hours to repair costs about $200,000 in lost production. ZTA dovetail liners reduce that risk. For the wholesale buyer, offering ZTA as an option allows you to serve the most demanding applications.
Because the ceramic has water absorption below 0.01%, it does not absorb process liquids. In a coal preparation plant where the process water is acidic, a porous tile would absorb the water and gradually weaken. In a power plant located in a freezing climate, a porous tile would absorb moisture, freeze, and crack. Dovetail liners with near‑zero porosity eliminate these failure modes. A coal prep plant in West Virginia that installed dovetail liners in an outdoor hopper reported no freeze‑related cracking after four winters. The previous epoxy‑bonded tiles had cracked every winter. For the end user, this means one less maintenance headache. For the wholesale buyer, it means a product that works in all climates.
Because the tiles can be individually replaced without removing adjacent tiles, maintenance is faster and cheaper. With epoxy‑bonded tiles, removing one tile often damages the neighboring tiles because the epoxy is strong. With dovetail liners, each tile is mechanically independent. To replace a worn tile, the operator grinds off the epoxy, slides the tile out of the rail, and slides a new tile in. The repair takes minutes, not hours. For a plant with hundreds of tiles in a chute, this reduces maintenance labor significantly. For the wholesale buyer, this is a feature that end‑users appreciate after the first repair.
Where Dovetail Liners Are Used
Mining and mineral processing – ore chutes, transfer chutes, rock boxes, dump hoppers, and feeder bins. A copper mine in Chile installed dovetail liners in a primary crusher discharge chute where epoxy‑bonded tiles had failed every 6 months. The dovetail liners have been in service for over three years with no failures.
Coal preparation plants – coal chutes, silo discharge hoppers, and refuse chutes. A coal prep plant in West Virginia used dovetail liners in a raw coal hopper that previously required replacement of epoxy‑bonded tiles every 12–14 months. The dovetail liners have run for four years with only minor wear.
Cement plants – limestone hoppers, clinker chutes, and raw meal feed chutes. A cement plant in Brazil installed dovetail liners in a clinker discharge chute. The previous steel chute was replaced every 8 months. The dovetail liners have been in service for 28 months.
Steel mills – sinter plant chutes, pelletizing disc liners, and coke handling hoppers. High temperature plus abrasive sinter feed. A steel mill in China used dovetail liners in a sinter plant dust collection chute where rubber liners had failed every 3 months. The ceramic liners have been running for over two years.
Power plants – coal pulverizer feed chutes, ash hoppers, and limestone slurry chutes. A power plant in Ohio installed dovetail liners in a coal feed chute. The previous steel chute was replaced every 12 months. The dovetail liners have been in service for five years.
