Choosing the Right Shape for Your Application
Reaction Type
Different reactions have different requirements in terms of surface area, pore structure, and mechanical strength. For example, gas-phase reactions may require a carrier with a high surface area, while liquid-phase reactions may require a carrier with good mass transfer properties.
Reactor Design
The design of the reactor can also influence the choice of catalyst carrier shape. Fixed-bed reactors may require a carrier with good mechanical strength, while fluidized-bed reactors may require a carrier with a low density and good fluidization properties.
Cost
The cost of the catalyst carrier is another important factor to consider. Spherical carriers are generally the most cost-effective option, while more complex shapes such as trilobes may be more expensive.
Standard Quality Control Testing Method
Shape and Size
This test verifies the uniformity of the alumina carrier shape and size that could affect the distribution of flow. Uniform and consistent flow distribution is necessary to sustain the appropriate reaction
Water Absorption
This test determines the porosity of the alpha catalyst carrier.
Drop Test
This test verifies the structural integrity of the alumina catalyst carrier in order to prevent breakage during installation or bed loading, which can lead to clogging resulting in pressure drop increase.
Crush Strength
This test ensures that the balls are of a homogeneous material and are free of mechanical defects which can lead to bed failure during operation.
Additional Test
Chemical Analysis
Thermal shock crush strength test
Leachable Iron
And other test upon customer's request
Key Considerations for Selecting Alumina Catalyst Supports
Reactor Type
Fluidized Bed Reactors: Require carriers with high abrasion resistance, uniform particle size, and excellent fluidization properties.
Fixed-Bed Reactors: Demand carriers with robust mechanical strength, optimized pore structures, and efficient reactant flow distribution.
Tower/Column Reactors: Need structured carriers with high vapor-liquid distribution capabilities.
Process Conditions
Temperature: High-temperature processes (e.g., dehydrogenation, hydrocracking) require thermally stable alumina.
Pressure: Mechanical strength and structural integrity under pressure are critical.
Chemical Environment: Acidic, basic, or corrosive conditions necessitate chemically inert alumina.
Catalytic Requirements
Surface Area & Porosity: Higher surface area improves active component dispersion, while tailored pore structures enhance mass transfer.
Customizability: Adjustable pore size, bulk density, and phase composition to match specific catalytic reactions.
Application-Specific Needs
Dehydrogenation, hydrodesulfurization (HDS), hydrodenitrogenation (HDN), CO shift reactions, or adsorption.
