Alumina Ceramic Tile
Two purity grades are common. 92% alumina offers Mohs hardness 9, bulk density of 3.60–3.63 g/cm³, and water absorption below 0.01%.-95% alumina has slightly higher density (3.68–3.70 g/cm³) and better wear resistance for more demanding applications.-The real advantage is near-zero porosity. Because water absorption is below 0.01%, no process liquid penetrates the tile
– no freeze-thaw cracking, no chemical attack from acidic slurries.-
How They Are Made
High-purity calcined alumina powder is milled and formed by dry pressing or cold isostatic pressing, which ensures uniform density throughout. Slow drying prevents micro-cracks. Sintering at 1500–1550°C fuses the grains into a dense, pore-free structure with Mohs hardness 9.Quality control includes chemical analysis, hardness testing, and dimensional inspection. Out-of-spec tiles are rejected.
Why Customers Benefit
Because the tile has Mohs hardness 9, it resists scratching from abrasive particles that would quickly wear through steel (Mohs 5–6). Because water absorption is zero, acidic slurries cannot weaken the tile and freezing climates cannot crack it. Because alumina ceramic is chemically inert, it resists attack where steel corrodes and rubber swells. In a large open-pit mine, metal chutes needed replacement every three months; after installing high-purity alumina tiles, service life extended to over one year. The high-density, fine microstructure of sintered alumina tiles also contributes to their wear resistance; they do not deform under abrasive conditions, unlike softer materials.

Where They Are Used
Power plant coal handling: a thermal plant's coal conveying pipelines suffered wear leakage requiring maintenance 2–3 times per month. After installing alumina ceramic liners, wear was greatly reduced, maintenance dropped to once per quarter, and operating costs fell by 40%.In the cement industry, clinker cooler discharge chutes, cyclone pipes, and pneumatic conveying systems all benefit from ceramic protection.
Equipment parts lined with alumina ceramic linings show significantly less wear than those protected by rubber or metal. In steel mills, alumina tiles are used in blast furnace hoppers, sinter plant chutes, and material handling systems to protect against wear from iron ore, coke, and sintered materials.-In South Australia's multi-mineral mine, white iron liners wore heavily within 13 weeks.
Zirconia-toughened alumina ceramic liners delivered 500% longer service life and reduced shutdown time by 80%.
